BACK TO SCHOOL
Greetings from a hotel room in Monterey, CA.
Later today I will speak at a car dealership about design because late capitalism and parenting will me to do odd things. Truthfully I am looking forward to it and days like today make me love my weird little life. I had a mommy martini at the welcome dinner last night and now I feel a little crooked- Wish me luck and more on this next week.
On Monday I got to be a judge for a CFDA design scholarship. I sat in on a number of students presenting their concepts and collections. These kids were born when I was in College myself, made me feel a little geriatric. I also did a boo boo with the screen off/audio of function of Microsoft teams and showed them all my tits while I clumsily fed the baby in a desk chair. Their work was generally very reductive and thematic, as all design schools seem to love to push kids to do. The general tone was so moody, I felt awful for these kids. One made a collection inspired by what suits look like when worn by a Korean business man who passes out on the sidewalk after working and drinking too hard. Another made a collection titled “My Therapist is a Poster of You” and another was inspired by the concept of Hikikomori, a Japanese term for people who withdraw from society for months on end and how simply getting dressed is an accomplishment. Right on! What a sick sad world we’re living in! Anyway they were all talented and made me excited for their future.
I’ve never really been a back to school shopper, but I have the shoppies for my reintegration into society and for my kid’s last year as a preschooler, the babies first autumn in life! I hope you enjoy these assortments of sweet nothings. I will probably regress by next week and have ambitions for an endless summer and will try to sell you tanning oil and sarongs again.
